An Introvert in an Extrovert's City

When moving to DC 4 years ago, I realized I hadn’t been a newbie in over a decade. I was forced to analyze when and how to meet people. I connected with a few old friends, volunteered at a local film festival, and met friends at work. But, what do you do to meet like-minded individuals to enjoy the many festivals the DC area has to offer or that great museum exhibit? Dating sites are promising love (which is beautiful, don’t get me wrong), but in such a career focused area, sometimes love is NOT on the brain! Meetup groups felt intimidating and not intimate enough to connect with someone. Playing softball isn’t my “thing.” I wasn’t going to wait to find people to attend events with, so I went to quite a few places by myself. I’m comfortable being alone, but I don’t tend to connect with people when I’m alone. PlusTou would have been perfect for that time in my life.

As an introvert, I tend to have extrovert friends. Thankfully, I had friends from undergrad and Ohio who made it a point to connect me with people they knew. Some of these interactions turned into long-term connections and travel buddies, and others are just casual Facebook friends. While these interactions proved beneficial in one way or another (boosting social skills, networking, etc.), I can’t help but wonder how different things might have been if there was an intermediary like PlusTou.

With PlusTou, getting to know the DC area and new people could have been done simultaneously. Those days I wanted to find great sushi? Share it on PlusTou. When I wanted to take a boat ride on the Washington Harbor? Share it on PlusTou. Those nights I would crave Ethiopian food? Share it on PlusTou. When I wanted to check out that concert playing at the 9:30 Club? Share it on PlusTou! (Ok, you get the point.)

PlusTou isn’t trying to take the place of your network. On the contrary; PlusTou is a supplement to networking. It eases the ability to connect with like-minded individuals. Connect in a group setting or on a one-on-one basis. Had PlusTou been a concept before moving, I would’ve connected!
